It usually focuses on neglected or banned topics in the society for the sake of social progress. However, this type of criticism takes the sanctities of the society, the customs and the beliefs into its consideration and that’s why it is defined as ideological and intellectual criticism.

Cultural criticism is taken from the cultural text before it shows the aesthetic side of the text. The critic of a cultural text needs the reasons and the circumstances that surround the text, so that he/she can identify the text. This study is an attempt to analyze the cultural and social aspects in 'The Last Night', a collection of stories by Jalal Mustafa. The two stories 'Cyclone' and 'Killing Dreams' from the Kurdish culture have been selected. The story of 'Cyclone' has still remained as an idea in the Kurdish society though with a low percentage. It is true that both religion and culture come closer when trying to understand the universe, but sometimes it causes conflict between the parties and this is clearly reflected in 'Cyclone'. On the other hand, the story of 'Killing Dreams' reflects politic, cultural and romantic themes.

Key words: Cultural criticism, cultured, critic, Defects and solution to social problems
ER -
