The impact of the socio-economic characteristics of citizens on public participation in urban planning

This study dealt with the issue of impact and the relationship between the economic-social characteristics of citizens and the extent of their contribution to public participation in urban planning. The study aims to diagnose the reality of public participation in urban planning in Dohuk City, in addition to highlighting the most important factors affecting public participation in urban planning, Especially in Dohuk city. The study relied on the descriptive analytical method. Regarding the data, the collection process is based on the questionnaire intended for this purpose. The forms were divided into (68 forms), the most important statistical indicators that selected in the hypothesis testing represented by frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The results of the study indicate that there is a strong direct relationship at a significant level (0.01) between the variables of socio-economic characteristics and the public participation in planning, which showed the hypothesis of the study, and that whenever social - economic characteristics improved, this led to better participation level general in urban planning, due to the existence of a positive association among the exploratory variables. The study recommended the need to use the principle of public participation in the city's future plans, in addition to the need to present future plans related to the future of Dohuk to the local community before implementing the plan in order to avoid problems with the local community.
