The continuity of mass consumption with the population increase that has exceeded 8 billion at the beginning of the first decades of the 3rd millennium have resulted in pressure on the environment which is considered one of the important pillars of sustainable development. Setting out from this point, there should be the conditions to bring about sustainable development in such a way that makes it accord with all relevant environmental aspects. The issue of taking care of the solid and non-solid wastes has been attended to by many studies and researches including the current paper that have tackled the historical contexts beginning from the Industrial Revolution and the appearance of the Classical School thoughts starting from the book “The Wealth of Nations” and ending with the ideas of sustainable development and cyclic economy.
This paper also deals with the sources, properties and types of wastes and how their possible negative effects are handled so as to find a positive relationship between solid wastes, their generation and recycling rates in addition to the study of sustainable living and the future possibilities and challenges of sustainable development.
