Abstract

This research aims to address the phenomenon of crypto currencies - specifically the Bitcoin - in terms of its origin and concept, factors affecting its price, the technology used, and whether it is worth investing in. To achieve this goal, the literature was reviewed, a set of statistical methods were used to compare and analyze data of Bitcoin and six international companies. The results indicated that investing in bitcoin compared to other international companies obtains more capital gains by 26 fold; it is, therefore, worth investing in. The research recommends that international monetary system should reconsider cryptocurrencies as part of electronic payment methods because the current trend is towards greater integration between technologies and finance (i.e Fintech).
